Restart you mac and HOLD THE OPTION KEY DOWN select the RECOVERY PARTITION 10.9.x. Not the Macintosh HD or whatever your volume is named. It will start up and wait for a pane that has list of 4 items. Select the LAST ITEM - your friend the DISK UTILITY.app and click on it so it launches.
